I love school and I don’t mind admitting it.  I’m working on my doctorate. I’m still in school and I’m 43 years old. I know lots of people like me, too. There are more and more women and men in their 60’s and even 70’s who are taking up a new career, learning a new language or even a new sport! What’s going on here?

 

Lifespans have increased. Health is better. Many seniors are active and fit. Options increase daily. So, who wouldn’t want to make the most of it and explore all the opportunities out there? There are so many things to do and to learn. Adult education has become really big.

 

Unlike the careers of past generations, adults often change careers several times during the course of our lives, including after we supposedly retire. I know a woman who finished acupuncture school in her 60’s and 10 years later, in her 70’s, is still practicing! My own mother has been a journalist, a piano teacher, a counselor and now an administrator in a charity organization. She’s only 65. Who knows what she’ll do next?

 

We can learn French, Spanish or Chinese. When we vacation in a foreign countries, it really enhances the experience to know the language. We can learn just enough to travel or go for the whole thing. You can get language tapes from Berlitz and other companies; but you can also sign up for language classes at a junior college or adult learning center near where you live. You can plenty of options if you do a web search,.

 

I know a man in his 60’s who always wanted to learn to fly but he never had the money until now. It’s very expensive to take pilot lessons. But now he’s retired and he finally has enough money and time to go for it. He’s so happy to be able to do it.  He’s healthy, has good eyesight and he has the benefit of years of living to allow him to have the wisdom to handle flying an airplane safely.

 

And you? Are you finished with your education? Are you curious about something?  If you’re under 40, you’ve only just begun!  It never needs to end.
